The Taxcast: January 2016

Jan. 25, 2016, 6:37 a.m.
What's Scotland got to do with the plunder of Moldova? We take a look at the 'Wild West' of Scottish Limited Partnerships. Also, we discuss the tensions in the EU; is the net finally closing on multinational companies, the tax minimisation deals they've been getting from various European countries and the big four accountancy firms who advised them? Just how bad was the sell off of one of Colombia's most profitable power generation companies? What's former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair got to do with it? And why's it been ignored outside Latin America? Also, we talk about the MEP who's dragging the European Commission through the courts to get access to papers they'd rather we didn't see. John Christensen will eat his hat if they DON'T reveal what MEP Fabio De Masi suspects they will: 'systematic political backup for a tax avoidance cartel that costs taxpayers in the EU hundreds of billions of dollars annually.'

Out of the Woods - Show #303 - 1-30-16

Jan. 24, 2016, 7:17 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Self organizing squats, free mass transit, and thoughts on infiltration from ARadio Berlin

Jan. 24, 2016, 1:18 p.m.
This week we're featuring more segments from other audio projects. Property is theft. In context of this, the far right has been organizing a call-out for anti-immigrant demonstrations across Europe for February 6th. In response, immigrant solidarity, anti-border and anti-racist groups are organizing a show of force against the xenophobic right. Firstly, we'll listen to a five minute segment recorded by Crna Luknja, or Black Hole in the Slovene language. Crna Luknja is an anarchist radio show on Radio Student in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The audio is an interview with folks at the self-organized refugee squat called Orfanotrofeio in Thessaloniki in Greece. It tells the story of the refugees and activists and their struggle to organize and hold the squat against efforts by the police and the Greek Orthodox Church. Next, Anarchistisches Radio Berlin held an interview with an anarchist member of the Passe Livre movement in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Passe Livre movement is an autonomous movement pushing for the foundation of free mass transit. The weight of an increase of cost of transportation falls mostly on the poor and differently abled folks who don't have cars and frequently must travel long distances between their homes and employment, when they're able to get it. In 2005 the Passe Livre movement began, trying to spread toll hopping and other direct action tactics and has continued for 11 years in various forms. The conversation covers changes in tactics, responses to repression and some of the cityscape of Sao Paulo, including the recent school occupations by students and other "Rights to the City" struggles such as squatting and anti-gentrification movements. Lastly we'll hear is a segment recorded again by A-Radio Berlin out of Germany. The audio is a recording of part of a presentation by Cilip magazine of Kate Wilson, a long-time anarchist and activist from the U.K. about her longterm friendship and romantic relationship with Mark Kennedy, an undercover police officer who had infiltrated protest groups between 2003 and 2010, when he was unmasked. During the half hour, Kate talks about the infiltration, the difficulty of finding out and verifying his capacity as an undercover cop and agent provocateur, of losing a trusted friend and confidant and some lessons she's taken from the betrayal. More audio from Anarchistisches Radio Berlin can be found at http://aradio.blogsport.de/ in German, English, French & Castellano Spanish. ========== Stay tuned next week for an interview with anarchists in Prague about Operation Fenix, an oppressive government initiative which specifically targets anarchists. ========== Playlist pending.

"The Rasmea Odeh Case"

Jan. 23, 2016, 9:26 p.m.
Rasmea Yousef Odeh is a Palestinian woman and former United States citizen. She served as associate director at the Arab American Action Network in Chicago, Illinois. The removal of her citizenship and removal from the U.S. is the subject of a protracted struggle by activists. At trial she was prevented by the judge from speaking of her torture that produced a confession to the Israeli military, while the prosecutor was allowed to introduce her confession and military detention as evidence she lied on a US application. Joe Iosbaker, a member of Rasma's defense committee speaks about the political repression of Palestinian solidarity activists, the role of Zionists prosecutors in the Justice Department and the stress of being smeared with accusations of "terrorism". He explains the connection to the FBI raid on his own house and a subpoena to testify before a grand jury about "material support to terrorists" as part of the governments attempt to suppress decent and political activism and its' connection to the persecution by the Justice Department of Rasma Odeh.

Free Mumia: Stop the Slow Motion Assssination of a Modern Revolutionary

Jan. 22, 2016, 2:19 p.m.
This week’s Global Research News Hour pays specific attention to the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the award-winning broadcast journalist and supporter of MOVE who spent almost thirty years on death row for a crime he almost certainly did not commit. This week’s show provides an extensive description of the circumstances surrounding his incarceration in 1982 for the first degree murder of a white police officer, and the irregularities and conflicting evidence exposing a mistrial. We follow with an interview with long-time supporter Suzanne Ross , representative of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal in which she discusses the background of the case, his removal four years ago from death row and his current health affliction, which she believes has been exacerbated by a deliberate withholding of treatment from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. In the final segment of the show, Glen Ford, editor of Black agenda report places the targeting of Mumia in the context of a broader counter-insurgency he argues has been waged against the African American population since the 1960s. For more information on Mumia Abu Jamal, please visit www.freemumia.com or listen to his radio essays at prisonradio.org
