New chapter in Rosenberg story.
July 21, 2015, 7:37 p.m.
Robert Meeropol unravels the truth about his parents', Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, conviction and execution for alleged espionage, giving atomic bomb information to the Soviet Union. Robert backs the recently released AP story that trial testimony in which Ethel's brother, David Greenglass, implicated Ethel in the atomic bomb spy case, contradicted his earlier statement to a grand jury where he emphatically stated Ethel was never involved.
There is evidence that David Greenglass and his wife, Ruth, lied to save their own necks.
Meeropol admits there are some gray areas with his parents. They were active members of the Communist Party, who believed in making the world a better place. His father helped champion the world's working class, which then was represented by the Soviet Union that was defeating Nazism. His mother was not involved, but she supported his father. Meeropol concludes that if the only people you support are people who are perfect, then you are going to end up supporting no one.
Meeropol also explains "closure" is an overused word, the execution of any living being does not really give "closure," and life is a continuing process -- "We all live with all of our experiences all of the time."
Sandor Katz: Wild Fermentation TWO of TWO
July 21, 2015, 4:56 p.m.
Sandor Katz is a much loved fermented food maker, teacher and respected author of two books: Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation. His mission is to rescue this ancient craft from oblivion and to inspire people to practice the arts of fermentation in their kitchens. This is the Question and Answer section after his talk at the second annual Heirloom Seed Expo in Santa Rosa, CA in September 2012. Katz responds to practical DIY questions about yoghurt, Kefir, and Kombucha. He ends with an inspiring linguistic flourish about political ferment and social change.
Dean Kuipers: Buying The Farm
July 21, 2015, 4:04 p.m.
Often when we cover agriculture, we look at what and how farmers are growing. But the infrastructure that undergirds every farm in America is finance. This week's guest on Sea Change Radio, author Dean Kuipers, explores how farms get the money they need to grow the food we eat. In his recently published Orion magazine article, "Buying the Farm," Kuipers picks apart the financial landscape of agriculture and compares financing for big agri-business versus smaller sustainable farming. Today we delve into the different models for financing agriculture not only in the U.S. but globally, examine how one small San Francisco bank is backing sustainable farmers, and take a peek at how an Illinois-based organic bean farmer is getting a leg up on the competition.
Out of the Woods - Show #276 - 7-25-15
July 21, 2015, 3:04 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

The 'New' Negro in Obama's America: A Frank Discussion Between Malachi Daniels and TheAngryindian
July 20, 2015, 9:23 p.m.
This dispatch of Fourth World Radyo features an open-ended Skype parliament (discussion) with North American street-activist and Afrocentric political educator Malachi Daniels (@Fanonian) and FWR host Abiyomi Kofi (@TheAngryindian) trading thoughts on the current state of the American African, living gracefully under the constant threat of racial terrorism and police brutality under the watchful eye of a Black president. Is the Obama administration simply observing the situation in abject silence, or is his administration actually aiding and abetting the injustice as a part of the class-war? These questions and others round out the discussion. Topics include many wide-ranging subjects and matters centred upon the paralysing, self-colonising trends developing in American (and Motherland) African culture(s) and what this might mean for Africans faced with physical survival within this century. All this and more on Fourth World Radyo!
'We want what we had'
July 20, 2015, 9:01 p.m.
Stephen Gowans reviews Kristen Ghodsee's book, "The Left Side of History: World War II and the Unfulfilled Promise of Communism in Eastern Europe." Ghodsee interviewed Eastern Europeans about socialism and their situation two decades after dissolution of the Soviet Union, including activists at an Occupy-styled protest in Bulgaria.
From these activists, we learn that many people want free education (like they had in the Soviet Union), and free child care (like they had in the Soviet Union), but they reject the term 'communism' and the Soviet Legacy. "We don't want communism" it has been said, "we just want to have a normal life."
But lack of all these nice things is 'normal life' under capitalism. There is little understanding of the difficulties in providing social wealth in former-fascist, war-torn countries like Bulgaria.
