Out of the Woods - Show #219 - 6-22-14

June 19, 2014, 6:36 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length, but I try to keep them approximately 30 minutes in most cases. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

The Loss of West Antarctic Glaciers, FOUR of FOUR

June 17, 2014, 11:27 p.m.
When NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, announced at a press conference on May 12, 2014, that the loss of the West Antarctic glaciers in the Amundsen Sea Embayment appears unstoppable I asked Professor Chris Rapley for his comments. As former Director of the British Antarctic Survey it had been his job and expertise to know all aspects of Antarctic research. Born and educated in Britain, Rapley became an international scientist. 40 years ago he began a six year term with NASA’s Solar Maximum Mission. Then he lectured at the Department of Space and Climate Physics of University College London from 1981 to 1987 and became Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm in 1994. The IGBP helps identify and assess risks posed to society and ecosystems by climate change. After almost ten years as Director of the British Antarctic Survey Professor Chris Rapley accepted the job as Director of the Science Museum in London. He had become more and more engaged with the question how to communicate the scientific facts of climate change and counteract the overwhelming financial power of the climate change deniers. They are preventing urgently needed action in face of a clear and present danger. Rapley moved back to University College London as Professor of Climate Science and has spent the last couple of years working with neuroscientists, psycho-sociologists and science policy people on the psychology of climate dismissal, the communication of climate science, and the interaction of climate science and policy. I spoke to Professor Rapley by phone on May 23, 2014.
