Out of the Woods - Show #208 - 4-3-14

This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length, but I try to keep them approximately 30 minutes in most cases. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. Testing the Earth - Radioactivity (TWO of TWO)

A program about the phenomenon of radiation and ways to monitor it. Opening with a clip from the song Radioactivity by Kraftwerk, leading into a sketch of the life and death of Madame Curie. She discovered radiation but was unable to understand its danger and died from radiation poisoning. Next the comedian Dick Gregory who states that radiation is worse than hunger and war: "Because I can feel hunger. I can see war. .. I cannot see radiation. I cannot smell radiation. I cannot hear radiation. I look around one day and I am dead." On to the synopsis of 36 years in the life of a Geiger counter builder, Dan Sythe, whose main goal was to help people with their health issues. The huge scale of radiation contamination becomes clear when one follows him on his travels from Chernobyl to Fukushima with visits to the Marshall Islands, the Lakota, Navajo, and Cherokee Nations to Khazakstan, to people harmed by uranium mining, milling, processing, and nuclear weapons development, including the Hanford Reservation in Washington State, Rocky Flats in Colorado, Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California, Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee, Los Alamos National Lab, New Mexico. Then back to monitoring of nuclear power plants such as Pilgrim in Massachusetts, Seabrook in New Hampshire where Dan installed community monitoring systems to track the emissions - then Kerr McGee in Oklahoma, Sellafield, England, Cap de la Hague and Cherbourg, France, Muraroa Atoll, Tahiti, and Hawaiʻi Island. Then on to the work Dan Sythe is doing now with the open source, "Make" community built site, Safecast.org, that is also supported by all major internet entities from Google to Twitter. They are undertaking what is often called the largest citizen science project to date. An attempt to deal with nuclear accidents and public health disasters and to get information directly from and to affected people. Then ending with Steven Starr, Senior Scientist with Physicians for Social Responsibility, who eloquently explains the extreme danger that Cesium 137 poses that is present in all fuel-pools at nuclear power power plants.

Northeastern U's ban, plus our interview with Eva Bartlett

First a local report; then, our host's direct interview with Canadian journalist/activist Eva Bartlett. Bowing to a campaign by Zionist donors, Northeastern University's administration has abruptly banned the campus organization Students for Justice in Palestine. This was triggered by a purposely dramatic SJP action: placing Israel-style mock eviction notices under dormitory doors. The goal was to awaken the student community to Israel's daily practice in Palestine. But the reason given by NU's administration for banning was transparently flimsy, in actuality showing its willingness to silence any criticism of Israel. Eva Bartlett was able to slip into Gaza in 2008, where she stayed for five years as a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement. She accompanied Gaza farmers and fisherman under threat of harassment and sniper fire from Israeli forces. She rode with medics in their ambulances during Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza in 2008-2009 that killed more than 1,400 Gazans. She has documented the 2012 Israeli attacks from a hospital in the central Gaza strip.She brings many shocking stories and photos back home.

Guy McPherson - Being a Realist

Quote from Woody Allen appears on the screen: "More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly." McPherson offers in his presentation a history of who knew what and when regarding industrial derived additions to the earth's atmosphere and the projected effect of such additions on average temperature. He lists various scientific reports from years to present that predict average global temperature rises and sudden non-linear effects on the ecosystem. Unfortunately, what was known to be a prudent response to the potential effect was in conflict with the dominant system, Capitalism, which requires unlimited growth in a finite space. McPherson catalogs the "official" reports and their projections together with what is known from the geological record; the shift in the Gulf Stream, now carrying warm water into the Arctic ocean, and the relationship of Equatorial-Polar temperature differential to Jet stream formation in building his case that the warming, forecast by the official scientific reports, is not survivable by humans, even when limited solely to CO2 increases. McPherson addresses the subject of methane and other heat trapping gases and the most recent observations of self-reinforcing feed back mechanisms which have increased in number. One of the points he notes is that it has been known by scientists and policy makers that there is a forty year time lag for the average temperature to reach equilibrium with the CO2 level. But McPherson ends on a positive note, if that can be conceived as possible, given what he is saying. Both he and his observations are attacked and maligned by many who assert that they know better. He addresses some of those accusations. One need only think of the lies of tobacco corporations, the pesticide industry, nuclear power, the Pentagon and their savage attacks on people who exposed their crimes. In the news today, General Motors attempting to mend the damage to it's corporate image, now that the public knows it again chose profit over public safety and in doing so destroyed lives and families. Ralph Nader discovered that truth in 1965 and GM tried to destroy him for it. The Q&A has some interesting questions about what to do in the face of potential "despair and utter hopelessness"; "Lives of excellence" and "Lives of love"; make poetry, at a time when it seems least needed, to paraphrase Leon Staff.
