Living With The Islamic Republic of Iran

Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett argue that the U.S. needs to change its policies towards the Iranian government, because Iran will play a leading role in the Middle East for many decades to come. The Leveretts state that the U.S. has misunderstood the Islamic Republic of Iran since its 1979 revolutionary inception by erecting myths (of irrationality, illegitimacy, and isolation) as the basis for a foreign policy that ill serves U.S. interests.
Flynt Leverett is a professor of international affairs at Penn State. From 1992 to 2003, he worked on Middle East policy at the National Security Council, The State Department, and the CIA.
Hillary Mann Leverett is a senior professorial lecturer at the American University in Washington, DC and a visiting scholar at Peking University in Beijing, China. She served as director for Iran, Afghanistan and Persian Gulf Affairs at the National Security Council under President George W. Earlier this month, the UK charity Oxfam released its report on global income inequality (âWorking for the Fewâ), just in time for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The paper detailed some shocking realities concerning the widening gap between rich and poor â notably, the fact that the richest 85 people on the planet possess the same wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion.
The public response to the paper has been overwhelmingly one of outrage, continuing the concerns about extreme disparity initiated by the Occupy movement. However, according to one pundit, the news coming from Oxfam is nothing short of âfantasticâ. In this episode of Smells Like Human Spirit, Guy Evans examines the pathology of the âsuper-richâ, and makes his case for why current global economic conditions are anything but âfantasticâ.

Frank Barat interviews Israeli historian Ilan Pappé

On today's longer show we feature an extensive interview with Ilan Pappé by journalist and activist Frank Barat. Few, if any, historians have done more to unearth the truth about Israel than Ilan Pappé. His 2006 book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine documents how the uprooting of more than 750,000 Palestinians was the direct consequence of a plan drawn up by Zionist leaders in 1947. It arguably remains the most serious study published yet of the Nakba (literally, "catastrophe"), the violent expulsion of Palestinians leading to Israel's formation the following year in 1948.
Among other things, Pappé talks about the blanket of ignorance still enveloping most Israelis, and expresses his hope that the younger generation may finally wake up to the facts. As an Israeli himself, he speaks of his own gradual awakening, which eventually triggered his move to England.
Frank Barat is a Human Rights activist based in London. He is one of the coordinators of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, a popular tribunal created in 2009 to expose and examine Israel's impunity in regards to its treatment of the Palestinian People. He has edited two books, Gaza in Crisis with Noam Chomsky and Ilan Pappé, and Corporate Complicity in Israel's Occupation with Asa Winstanley. He has also participated in the book 'Is there a court for Gaza?' with Daniel Machover.
