The peace movement is stirring from its slumber in the United States and Canada. Various coalitions have called for a week of action on Obama's escalating intervention in Syria. Why has Obama invested so much in this mercenary war?
"It seems to me to be the same strategy we've had with all the Arab and Muslim countries that we've undermined," says Clark, referring to the continuous slow destruction of Iraq and other countries. Now it's Syria's turn.
One rationale put forward for U.S. intervention in Syria is that of Hezbollah involvement and their alleged violation of international law. That's rich.
Also, what are they doing to the Voting Rights Act? Is there any politician capable of maintaining basic rights for American citizens?

In February 2013, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified PCBs as carcinogenic to humans. During the expert meeting that led to the reclassification, much attention was given to the respiratory exposure route. Breathing PCBs is now recognized by scientists as a major source of exposure.
David O. Carpenter, MD, Director of the State University of New York University of Albany Institute for Health and the Environment served on the IARC PCB carcinogenicity panel that met in Lyon, France. Dr. Carpenter describes the work of this panel and explains the scientific basis for reclassification.

Back from Beirut, Mahdi Nazemroaya, newly the author of "The Globalization of NATO," reports on the regional conflict engulfing Syria. The Syrian government surprised the great powers by surviving the onslaught of the Gulf monarchies and NATO. "The only reason it surprised them was because of their imperial arrogance," comments Nazemroaya.
The insurgents are in retreat in parts of Syria. Fighting has spilled over into Lebanon, which is where Hezbollah's intervention has taken place.
"We can see where every country stands" when it comes to Syria. How do Arabs feel? Does France have the right to determine Syria's destiny? Which of the Gulf dictatorships will lead the war for democracy? They'll keep the war going as long as their brutal sweatshops aren't collapsing.
In Egypt, Morsi was calling for a "no-fly-zone." Now, Egyptians are calling for a "No Morsi Zone." It reminds one of Erdogan. They have sown the wind. Who will reap the whirlwind?

NSA leaks and computer security

This week's episode features two conversations. The first is with Micah Lee of the Electronic Frontier Foundation about the NSA leaks and what information that came out of it (at the time of this show's airing) was actually new and a general overview of what government surveillance in the U.S. looks like over computers.
The second conversation is with the Bay Area-based hacker, Bill Silverfox. Bill works with Hackmeet.org. We spend most of the hour discussing different communication technologies that most of us take for granted and talk about what can be done to use those mediums more safely.

This project helps provide and protect anonymity of activists, journalists and other folks around the world, including in countries with strict internet censorship. You can download a more secure web-browser from them, too! It's pretty rad. But, as their website points out, it's not just your browser but how you traverse the web that can be a dealbreaker. This project has helped to secure communications among activists struggle against the state worldwide.
https://www.riseup.net : An amazing resource for anti-state, anti-capitalist, anti-oppression activists. They provide social-networking (via crabgrass), email, lists, information on web security, document sharing (via etherpad), news, chat, vpn and MORE! This project is pretty darn internally secure AND has refused to hand over information before. Plus, these little birds need some funds.

The Citizens Climate Lobby has 108 chapters around the U.S. and is involved at the policy level of environmental decision-making. Two lobbyists from the Richmond chapter of CCL discuss the anthropogenic components of climate change (e.g. increased levels of methane and CO2, water pollution and acidity, and deforestation) and how these factors might be controlled with policy. One option, the "Carbon Tax," would create a fee proportional to pollution ($15 per ton of CO2 emitted) and so use 'free market' principles to make green investment financially attractive and tenable. If environmental policies are not effected, climatological deterioration will continue with temperature increases beyond 4 degrees Fahrenheit, with the worst case prognoses at 8 degrees Fahrenheit. And climatological disaster will spoil essential resources like the water and food supply, produce crop pests and weed hypertrophy, shift climate zones, and, in transforming where and how people can live, cause mass migrations and global conflict. Guest speaker William Nelson says, "People are not good at making long-range decisions, but if we don't make them now, we are saddling our children and grandchildren with a deck of cards that they aren't going to be able to play with. ...
