Increasing ill health, Maté suggests, is a natural response to an increasingly sick society.

Factory farms produce a majority of our nation's meat. Over two-thirds of the beef consumed in this country comes from farms with at least 5,000 head of cattle; more than 90 percent of the chicken we eat comes from only ten companies; and over the last 30 years the number of hog farms has dropped to a tenth of what it was, while pork sales have remained steady.
With these mammoth farms come appalling conditions and animal overcrowding. The factory farm solution: hormones and antibiotics, which boost meat production and reduce animal disease. Pharmaceuticals are being used at an unprecedented rate. And if you think you can avoid the drug exposure by limiting or eliminating meat from your diet, the scientific community has some bad news for you - studies have recently shown that this use of pharmaceuticals on livestock is having devastating effects on our groundwater.
This week's guest on Sea Change Radio is Avinash Kar, a staff attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council (or NRDC). He talks to host Alex Wise about NRDC's role in the fight to regulate and create transparency in how drugs are used on livestock.

This conversation between Mike Davis and the editor of the SF Bay Guardian, Tim Redmond, was recorded at a benefit for the SF Anti-Eviction Coalition. Standing room only audience had come to see the man who had taught Los Angelinos to see their city with new eyes. In his book, the City of Quartz, Davis recalls the citrus groves and cooperative farms of the turn of the century that were replaced with unregulated urban growth driven by a blade runner style capitalism. Unearthing the forces that now shape cities Davis says that Los Angeles, San Francisco and other American cities might share a common future and that we all might share a common strategy to protect the places we need and care for.

Vegan Action is a national organization that educates people about and advocates for vegan options that reduce the suffering of animals. The vegan lifestyle consists in avoiding products linked to animal suffering in one's dietary, clothing, cosmetic, health, and cleaning choices. Veganism has secondary motivations, too: the reduction of large-scale animal farms (and their negative impact on the environment) and cultivating the health benefits of a plant-based diet. It can be difficult to embark on a vegan diet, so Vegan Action has a collection of recipes and resources, as well as a certification label on products to inform consumers that an item is genuinely vegan. Vegan Action's current campaigns and outlook are focused on education and 'big picture' encouragement, promoting conscientiousness when a person can make an alternative choice that's better for animals, the environment, and their own health (for example, using vegetable broth instead of beef broth).
