Chumbawamba In Memoriam: Margaret Thatcher

Back in 2005, anarchist collective Chumbawumba pre-sold an EP called In Memoriam: Margaret Thatcher which they would keep under wraps until the prime minister passed away. Since Thatcher did pass earlier this week, the band has delivered the EP and is also streaming the release online. Along with that, the band delivered a eulogy:

Deconstructing Edward Bernays' 'Propaganda' (Part 1)

Edward Bernays, born in Vienna in 1891 and famously the nephew of Sigmund Freud, was perhaps the pioneer in the field of Public Relations, and highly influential in providing the framework for modern advertising.
His work aimed to convince people to want things that they didn't need, and in the process, link their unconscious desires to the consumption of mass produced goods. This in turn, it was theorized, could be used to control the masses, as by keeping them distracted on frivolous happenings and relatively unimportant wants, they wouldn't interfere with the activities of what he called âthe important fewâ.
All the while, he was remarkably candid about his intent. In one of his first books, 'Propaganda' (1928), he coined the term âengineering of consentâ to describe his technique for controlling the masses. In this podcast series, Guy Evans examines just how influential these ideas were, and details the resulting impact in relation to public relations, advertising, celebrity culture, and democracy itself.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Star speakers are two survivors of garment factory fires in Bangladesh, both at subcontractors (sweatshops) producing clothes for Wal-Mart. One was the Tazareen fire that killed over 100 workers and has been compared to the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York in the early 20th century

NYC MAYORAL CANDIDATES ENGAGE RELIGIOUS LOBBISTS
The New York City mayoral campaign came to the Bronx overnight when seven contenders for the Democratic Party nomination appeared in a forum at the faith-based Monroe College. The forum was convened by the religious interest group, City Action Coalition. Topics included the economy, drugs, policing, education and the relationship between church and state.
The candidates responded sequentially to questions in the following order: BILL deBLASIO, RANDY CREDICO, BILL THOMPSON, ERIC SALGADO, ADOLFO CARRION, SAL ALBANESE and JOHN LIU.
