We often hear about efforts to raise the fuel efficiency standards for our nation's fleet of automobiles but what's being done to make our trucks and buses burn less gas? This week's guest on Sea Change Radio, is doing something to help tackle this problem. John Boesel is the CEO of CALSTART, a non-profit organization that's trying to help develop and implement clean, more efficient transportation solutions by advocating for more progressive policies. Boesel and host Alex Wise discuss the barriers to change fuel efficiency standards over the past thirty years, the progress that's been made over the past four years, what hurdles lie ahead and what lessons we can learn from similar efforts in other countries.

Michael Welch interivews co-author Nick Barry-Shaw on the recently published book Paved with Good Intentions. The book cuts through the NGO catchphrases of âparticipationâ and âempowerment,â Paved with Good Intentions is a critical history that examines the relationships between NGOs, the Canadian government and social movements, in both the North and South. Connecting the NGO boom to the onset of the neoliberal era, this book illustrates how NGOs have served to soften the blow of structural adjustment while co-opting dissent. This book is a call to judge NGOs by the standards they set for themselves when they claim to work for development in poorer countries.

Utilizing freedom of Information requests, wikileaks and over 50 original interviews, Sprague is able to get answers about the development of the Haitian paramilitaries from the rise of Haiti's first democratically elected leader Bertrand Aristide, through the American sponsored coup in 2004 through to the earthquake of two years ago. A PH d candidate in sociology, he has also received a most censored award for a 2008 article he co-wrote with a Haitian based journalist.

The first hour we heard from Barbara Mike, president of the Santa Cruz Indian Council discuss the upcoming June 30th community pow wow at the Loudon Nelson Center. She spoke about the the educational and cultural nature of the event, and the drums and dancers that will be participating. She discussed the importance and richness of native culture and the ways in which the council works to educate our youth; our future.

In the second we heard Ann Marie Sayers, author, activist and tribal chairperson of Coastonoan Ohlone Indian Canyon. She spoke about the upcoming 16th annual story telling festival and indigenous gathering in Hollister on Saturday, June 30th. There will be numerous and well known story tellers, dancers, musicians and artists sharing their words and dances of wisdom, history and reading. She also discussed the sacredness of the land and water.

In this second half of his talk Miko Peled, son or General Matti Peled, one of the founding fathers of Israel, talks about the moment in his life where everything changed.
His 13 year old niece Smadar was among those killed in Jerusalem by two Palestinian suicide bombers. Miko Peled learned from his sister Nurit. She surprised the world press by blaming not the Palestinians but the Israeli government for the death of her daughter. She said the brutal occupation of Palestine had led to a measure of despair that caused the young suicide bombers to take their own lives, along with that of her daughter. Peled also explains why the two state solution is no longer possible and calls for one secular democratic state in which Palestinians and Israelis live side by side.
