#523 - Ivan Illich and The Collapse of Power
Oct. 30, 2010, 5:57 a.m.
This week we take a look at that engimatic modern prophet, Ivan Illich. His writings covered a wide range of areas, from health to technology to economics to church history and way beyond. Robert Hutchinson will give a quick biographical sketch and introduce some of his radical strands of thought, before we focus on a single major prophesy, the sudden collapse of social power, its revelation as a fiction. We link this to the confidence based backing of centralised currency and hear from Marshall Rosenberg, George Draffan and others on related fictions which people internalise as a response to hierarchy.

The Third Revolution?
Oct. 30, 2010, 2:59 a.m.
Audio from Nick Heath's talk, "The Third Revolution? Worker and peasant resistance to the Bolshevik government", recorded on 27th October 2010.
Part of a national speaking tour, Nick Heath presented his new pamphlet on the wave of rebellions and uprisings of rank-and-file Russian workers and peasants across the country in 1919-1921 against the Bolsheviks, who were consolidating their grip on power. Contrary to the Bolsheviks' claims, these rebellions were not reactionary but in fact in support of the original aims of the revolution: socialism, and workers' and peasants' self-management. Taken together they can be referred to as a Third Revolution.

MICHAEL PARENTI (early 1990s) concurs, with examples from Haiti and elsewhere. I suggest that the US is now being pushed down the same road as Haiti. And comedians BOB AND RAY offer a comic look at a domestic company that has adopted a Third-World business model: The Great Lakes Paper Clip Company.

internationally and sees the ties that bind the labor and environmental movements
in the U.S. Leo Gerard, President of the United Steelworkers with 850,000 members
in the USA and Canada is a co-founder of the Apollo Alliance, whose goal is
developing efficient energy alternatives to fossil fuels and jobs, jobs, jobs. Labor &
environmental activists are pressing for the creation of green jobs as the way to
re-industrialize the U.S., and are fighting to make sure that U.S. trade relations
change so that jobs are kept in the U.S.. The Steelworkers recently filed a complaint
with the World Trade Organization(WTO), which the Obama administration is
investigating, which accuses China of violating the WTO free-trade rules by
subsidizing exports of clean energy equipment like solar panels and wind turbines.
