Dahia Wasfi is a woman of American-Jewish and Iraqi ancestry, a physician, and a peace activist. At the May 15 Deep Politics conference in Santa Cruz, she spoke of stolen land and ethnic cleansing. She asked, Who are the good guys, and who are the bad guys? And she argued that the occupation of Iraq is an extension of the occupation of Palestine. This week she also discusses US/Israeli military cooperation--including joint operations--throughout the Middle East.

Liberation Theology-Part 2, the Murder of Oscar Romero

Initially, Oscar Romero was a conservative Catholic appointed arch-bishop of San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, in 1977. In fact, his appointment was considered to be an enormous setback to those in San Salvador who were working for social justice. But, Romero’s life was transformed when he witnessed the assassination of a priest who was working to politically organize and mobilize a group of rural campesinos, rural farmworkers. Reflecting on this, Romero remarked that if this priest was killed for this work, he must follow inhis path—that is the path of Liberation Theology.

Marine Recruiting station shot up in Chantilly, Virginia

On the night of October 25 or early morning October 26, someone shot up a Marine recruiting center in Chantilly, Va. Like the earlier shootings at the USMC museum and the Pentagon, this was a property-damage only shooting, no injuries reported. Meanwhile,the FBI is reporting that the Pentagon and USMC shootings were carried out with the same rifle

Dr. Barbara Thompson - Cantor Arts Curator - Art of Africa and the Americas

Dr. Barbara Thompson is the Phyllis Wattis Curator for the Arts of Africa and the Americas for the Cantor Arts Center. She oversses the collection of African, precolombian, and Native American Art. Prior to her arrival at Stanford, Dr. Thompson was with the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She organized ten exhibitions at the Hood, including "Black Womanhood: Icons, Images, and ideologies of the African Body." Dr. Thompson kindly and generously brought a wonderful collection of music from around the world which contains references to Vodou and Mami Wata, a deity which has been worshipped over many centuries and who is the center of an exhibition at Cantor Arts on the Stanford Campus.
