Doughnut Economics VS the The Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

Feb. 8, 2022, 5:41 p.m.
In early February of 2022 a news caster warned that the US may be about to lose it’s status as a world superpower to China, based on the GDP. The Gross Domestic Product is the total market value of the goods and services produced by a country’s economy. For the year 2021 the GDP of the US has been growing by only 5.7% - while that of China has grown 8.1% The GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market and recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace and to the preservation of the environment. Hawaii was taken over in 1898 by American sugar planters and missionaries, with the support of the US marines. For the last 16 years the Hawai'i Book & Music Festival recovers and celebrates the cultures of the islands. They bring together Hawaiian poets, storytellers and musicians, with community thought leaders and experts in Hawaiian sustainability and resilience. In cooperation with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, they are also inviting international speakers. In 2021 it was the climate scientist Michael Mann, from Pennsylvania State University. And the English economist Kate Raworth, who studied economics at Oxford. Disillusioned by “modern” economics, she dedicated her life to changing the way economic success is measured and public policy determined. Kate Raworth puts the needs of people first - be it food, water, housing, health, equity, and a political voice and wants them met without overshooting the Earth's ecological ceiling. This and more is laid out in her graphic presentation of three concentric circles which she tongue-in-cheek calls Doughnut Economics. Kate Raworth is being introduced at the 16th annual Hawai'i Book & Music Festival on October 7, 2021, by Kamana-maikalani Beamer, a full professor at the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa. DATE: 10/07/2021

Eric Lebel: Cooking With Gas?

Feb. 8, 2022, 11:55 a.m.
When momentum starts to build, people like to exclaim, “Now we’re cooking with gas!” Well, a recent study out of Stanford University might have us re-thinking that expression. The study found that methane leaking from stoves inside U.S. homes has the same climate impact as about half a million gasoline-powered cars and, furthermore, that these stoves expose household members to respiratory disease-triggering pollutants. Findings like these are prompting some jurisdictions, like the US’s largest urban center, New York City, to ban gas hook-ups in new buildings. Keep in mind that approximately 2000 new buildings are erected there each year. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Eric Lebel, part of the Stanford research team that conducted the study, to learn more about their methods and findings. We discuss the impact that America’s 40 million gas stoves might be having on the air we breathe (both inside and out of our homes), how to transition away from these types of appliances, and why in many ways it’s an environmental justice issue.

Mariana Mazzucato: governments must collaborate with private sector

Feb. 4, 2022, 5:08 a.m.
Renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato argues that governments ought to be active co-creators and co-shapers of markets alongside the private sector. She is a is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL), where she is Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose. She is also chairs the World Health Organization Council on the Economics of Health for All. In her latest book, Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism, Professor Mazzucato argues that capitalism is failing to solve a host of problems including disease, inequality, the digital divide and the environmental crisis. She points to many of the world's greatest achievements, such as the moon landing or the invention of the internet, which she says stemmed from government investment, not the private sector. What would it take to bring the best out of both public and private sectors, in pursuit of mission goals on urgent and massive challenges?
