Economic Disobedience & Debt Abolition - Chris Hedges with Thomas Gokey

July 27, 2021, 10:06 a.m.
How can a discussion of the enormous debt and looming homelessness faced by ordinary people in the US, once the covid pandemic is ending, be inspiring and visionary? In preparation for that fight Thomas Gokey and the Debt Collective have begun organizing debtors into a union. They already had victories canceling $2.8 billion in student debt, medical debt, payday loans, probation debt and credit card debt. Today the sheer magnitude of the problem we will have to deal with soon - over 40 million people in the US facing eviction once Covid moratoria disappear - is seen as an opportunity. Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, a New York Times best-selling author, a professor at Rutgers University, and an ordained Presbyterian minister. He interviewed Thomas Gokey on the July 22, 2021 edition of his weekly TV program On Contact. Thomas Gokey, is a visual artist, adjunct professor at Syracuse University, activist and cofounder of the Debt Collective. Their website is debtcollective.org/. And the title of the new Haymarket book is: Can't Pay, Won't Pay - The Case for Economic Disobedience and Debt Abolition, written by the Debt Collective. They are creating a debtors union and sign up is easy at their website, debtcollective.org. Thanks to Chris Hedges for permission to re-broadcast. You can watch the 27 minute video of the interview by searching for Chris Hedges - On Contact.

STRIKING COAL MINERS SAY ITS A MATTER OF LIFE & BREATH PART 1

July 27, 2021, 8:39 a.m.
Building Bridges radio, produced by Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash ***************************************** Part 1 of a 2 part program to be sent next week Alabama Striking Coal Miners, 4 Months on the Picket Line Say A Fair Contract Is A Matter of Life & Breath! with . Cecil Edward Roberts, Jr., Pres. of the United Mine Workers of America (UMA), a sixth-generation coal miner and one of the labor movements most stirring orators . Braxton Wright, striking coal miner . Haeden Wright, pres. of a local UMWA womens auxiliary unit For the first time in four decades, union mine workers in Alabama are taking part in a historic strike, accusing Warrior Met Coal of exploiting workers and now inspiring violence against them on the picket line. More than three months in, the historic labor action has been ignored by CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC, says Media Matters, but certainly not Building Bridges. The origins of the strike lie in the 2016 takeover of a failing coal company by Warrior Met, leading to profits for the buyer alongside lower pay and loss of benefits for the workers. The miners in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, who were caught up in the acquisition faced dramatic pay cuts and weaker safety measures for what is one of the nations most dangerous professions, leading to multiple charges of unfair labor practices levied against Warrior Met.

#699 -- Chris Hedges: American Sadism

July 25, 2021, 6 p.m.
The best part (the second half) of a fiery and brilliant speech by journalist, essayist, activist, and prophet Chris Hedges. Hedges argues that sadism defines every aspect of American life, from the corporate-controlled popular culture to the politics to--especially--the harsh neoliberal-capitalist economic system. The interlocking systems all oppress the huge majority of Americans for the benefit of a tiny elite. Both political parties, including Mr. Biden, serve the elite and promote the oppression of the rest of us--destroying the environment in the process. (Continued under "Credits"... )

Committed to Vaccine Solidarity, Cuba Needs Our Support

July 25, 2021, 8:01 a.m.
Documentary film maker, literacy and social justice activist, Catherine Murphy speaks about her ten years in Cuba; the experience of tens of thousands of young Cuban volunteers in what became the 1961 National Campaign for Literacy that taught 700,000 illiterate peasants to read and write, and about which she made the documentary film Maestra; and the Cuban peoples work to break free from the legacy of colonial oppression that saddled their economy with an over dependence on the sugar industry. Cuba, in spite of the United States campaign to destroy Cuba's commitment to share what it learns as a society, is a leader in biotechnology and health care. It has successfully developed two Covid-19 vaccines against the pandemic that it is offering to share as well as provide to it own citizens. But the U.S. economic blockade has created a critical shortage of syringes on the island. They have the vaccine but require the syringes to administer it. Having limited the pandemic on the island until now, a spike in cases, likely due to tourism, makes it imperative to vaccinate all Cubans. Global Health Partners and Cuba Solidarity committees are collecting funds to send syringes to Cuba.
