Sonic Cafe #224/Drugs Are Bad, M'Kay?

Feb. 4, 2021, 8:03 a.m.
Sonic Café, with the Lenny Kravitz cover of the Jimi Hendrix psychedelic rock classic Purple Haze, so ahh far out huh? Hey I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 224. This time the Sonic Café has some fun with the ever-changing perceptions around drugs and alcohol in today’s world. Representing drugs are good; listen for comedian, social critic and satirist Bill Hicks, captured live in 1989. Bill was way ahead of his time, but left too early, passing on to that big stage in the sky in 1994. But his impact lives on with Rolling Stone recently ranking him number 13 on its’ list of the 50 best comedians of all time, so yeah. Then representing drugs are bad, the Sonic Café presents an enlightening lecture from Southparks school counselor Mr. Mackey, Mmkay? These wildly divergent opinions are wrapped in a music mix conjured up from like 80 years. Wow, just wow. Listen for Steely Dan, All Time Low, Chick Webb & His Orchestra, Nine Inch Nails, john Lennon, Ike & Tina Turner and of course many more. Ohhh and a big Sonic Café welcome to our latest sponsor. Toilet Cleaner, the hot new legal high that takes you to places you never imagined, and ahh leaves you forever changed. Toilet cleaner. It’s time to smoke a real bowl. Ahh all that and more this time from that little café on the big, blue Pacific coast, we’re the Sonic Café.

"Marta Morena Vega - One Religion People Forced to Migrate Brought to the Americas"

Feb. 3, 2021, 5:51 p.m.
The Altar of My Soul Religious beliefs normally follow people as they migrate, including people who are forced to migrate. The people forced to migrate to the western Hemisphere during the slave-trading period carried their beliefs and belief systems to the diaspora of their new world. The Santeria religion, also know as Lucumí, is a belief system that originated in Africa later brought to the Americas and is still practiced in widely separated communities of the western hemisphere. Marta Moreno Vega, a Santeria Priestess, and university professor in New York City is the author of “The Alter of My Soul.” Her book is a story of the Santeria or Lucumí religion, its traditions, how they were brought from Africa and are practiced now. I spoke with Marta Moreno Vega by phone in November of 2000, and we began when I asked her to tell us about the Santeria religion and how it differs from other religions. Marta Morena Vega recommends “Face of The Gods: Art and Altars of Africa and the African Americans,” by Robert F. Thompson. Originally Broadcast: November 7, 2000

Black History Month - Fred Gray - Civil Rights Attorney for Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King

Feb. 2, 2021, 2:23 p.m.
Who was the attorney for Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King at the beginning of the Civil Rights struggle? Fred Gray, just out of law school, had made a commitment to destroy everything segregated in his home state of Alabama when he was in high school. Rosa Parks was only his second case, after Claudette Colvin, a teenager, who nine months earlier had been the first to refuse to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus and in turn inspired Rosa Park. When Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for violating the segregated seating ordinance, 26-year-old Martin Luther King was chosen to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and 24-year-old Fred Gray also became his and the movement's lawyer. Gray's legal victory in the federal courts ended the boycott 381 days later. Fred Gray won scores of civil rights cases in education, voting rights, transportation, and health. He represented the Freedom Riders, the Selma-to-Montgomery marchers, and the victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. It was a Republican and former employee of the United States Public Health Service, Peter Buxtun, who blew the whistle on the Tuskegee study. Poor black sharecroppers were led to believe they were being treated, while in reality the study recorded the progression of untreated Syphilis. In 2009 Buxtun was the events coordinator for the Republican Roundtable. He invited Fred Gray to speak - and allowed TUC Radio to attend and record the event.   The early history of the civil rights movement comes to life in this story of Fred Gray's life and education, as speaks for the first time in his life to a Republican audience - at least an audience that told him they were Republican. Fred Gray ends by saying that racism is still alive and even re—emerging in this country and makes an appeal to end it. He said this in 2009.
