Dr. Jane M. Healy - Children Versus Television

April 14, 2021, 9:22 p.m.
Endangered Minds & Failure to Connect It used to be that children would play with objects, be told or read stories, or perhaps listen to the radio during a significant portion of their early years. With the advent of television, videos and computers, that tactile and oral world is often left behind. Children who are frequently exposed to television, videos and computer games in the first seven years of life have been found to develop pathways in the brain that later are significantly deficient in reading, studying and socialization skills. Dr. Jane M Healy is an educational psychologist with expertise in developmental psychology, and specialist in the brain development of young children. Her recent books, “Endangered Minds,” and “Failure to Connect,” discuss how television, videos and computers affect the minds of children. Dr. Jane M. Healy recommends “The Goddess in Older Women,” by Jean Bolden. Originally Broadcast: May 9, 2001

Homage to Ramsey Clark

April 14, 2021, 8:50 p.m.
Phil devotes this segment to a eulogy in praise of US former Attorney-General Ramsey Clark. Not only did Clark author two historic pieces of civil rights legislation in the USA in the 1960s, he went on, after his tenure in office, to lend his considerable legal skills to oppose U.S. imperial adventures around the world, often traveling great distances to defend clients and to show solidarity with the people under attack by the U.S. empire. Phil then replays a Taylor Report interview conducted with Ramsey Clark in 2015, in which Clark recounts his visit to Syria, and the need to stop the U.S. effort there towards destabilization and regime-change.

Sonic Cafe #234/Jazz Club: The Birth of BeBop

April 14, 2021, 12:49 p.m.
Sonic Café, Woody’n You that’s Coleman Hawkins from 1944 with the first formal recording of bebop jazz, so welcome to Jazz Club, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 234. This time we head downstairs to the jazz club in the lower level at the Sonic Café to bring you a very special jazz retrospective we call the birth of bebop. With it’s earliest roots traced back to 1939 at Minton’s Playhouse bebop marked a major turning point in the evolution of America’s jazz music scene. It was music for musicians, prioritizing speed over smoothness, complexity over simplicity and art over commercial success. We’ll feature commentary by drummer Kenny Clarke pulled from a 1969 interview, plus stories of the early prophets of the new music Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and more. All mixed together with some of the most defining music of the genre including tunes from Dizzy, Charlie and Monk, plus Bub Powell, Sonny Stitt, Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderley, J.J. Johnson, Miles Davis and of course more this time as the Sonic Café presents the birth of bebop, from the jazz club, here in the lower level of our little café on the big, blue Pacific coast. We’re the Sonic Café.

Hanan Ashrawi explains her departure from the PLO; and ...

April 14, 2021, 11:19 a.m.
What is happening with the Palestine Liberation Organization, the PLO? What is its relationship to the Palestinian Authority? What role does it play in Palestinian governance and politics? Palestinian podcaster Salem Barahmey discusses these questions and more with the PLO’s most visible member, Hanan Ashwari on the eve of her leaving the organization. Why is she leaving? Why now? It is a fascinating discussion. Also discussed: The Zionist lobby continues to exert pressure on American Universities to silence Palestinian voices on campus in violation of the First Amendment and principles of Academic Freedom, to their shame. Now, under pressure from Israel advocates, Butler University in Indiana has decided to shut down a lecture with eminent scholar and activist Angela Davis. Isreal is losing the support of young people on the issue of Palestine. That is why there is such an effort to censor Palestinian activism on campus. We would like to think that Butler would be the last to swing and miss on this issue, but don’t bet the ranch on it.

Ramsey Clark's Appeal for Peace STOP the War on Iraq - Let Iraq LIVE!

April 13, 2021, 9:49 p.m.
Former U.S. attorney general and longtime human rights lawyer Ramsey Clark died on April 10, 2021 at the age of 93. He served as attorney general from 1967 to 1969. After leaving office, Clark became a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy. “The world is the most dangerous place it’s ever been because of what our country has done, and is doing” he said. I recorded him in San Francisco on October 12, 2002 - He said that when George Bush declared his war on terrorism he made the most lawless step in the history of the United States. Ramsey Clark warned of another war on Iraq - both for the poor and tortured people of that country and for us, for our own safety and for our souls. In spite of huge peace demonstrations across the world - war began on March 19, 2003.
Few people knew Iraq as well as Ramsey Clark. While the bombs fell on Iraq in 1991 he traveled 2000 miles by car. He returned to Iraq every year to see the effect of the sanctions and weekly US/UK bombings. He visited hospitals and devastated neighborhoods.

April 13, 2021, 2:26 p.m.
While the RWDSU challenges Amazons roadblocks to its unionization drive at Amazons Bessemer Alabama warehouse we cant help but think how different the outcome would be if the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act was the law! with Pro-Union Workers, Bessemer Alabama Amazon Warehouse with Brandon Magner, labor lawyer and who writes about unions and the law at Substack, Labor Law Lite While Amazon has left no stone unturned in its efforts to gaslight its own employees. We wont let Amazons lies, deception and illegal activities go unchallenged, which is why we are formally filing charges against all of the egregious and blatantly illegal actions taken by Amazon during the union vote. Amazon knew full well that unless they did everything they possibly could, even illegal activity, their workers would have continued supporting the union. RWDSU Pres. Stuart Appelbaum But, if the PRO Act was already law, Amazon wouldn't have been able to resort to its dirty anti-union tricks!
