Postal Union Fights Trump Privatization Plan

May 9, 2020, 8:52 a.m.
Postal workers union leader warns USPS could be dead in three months and Trump efforts to privatize it are an attack on a legal right of the people. with Jonathan Smith, the President of the New York Metro Area Postal Union, and a special message from actor/activist Danny Glover We cannot allow Trump to use this horrific pandemic as an opportunity to bankrupt and privatize the Postal Service. Now, more than ever, we need a strong and vibrant postal system to deliver mail 6-days a week. Congress must act now to save it. Attacks on this institution are an attack on one of the most reliable public sector employers in the United States and with a unionized work force. USPS has been a place of employment for Black workers who have suffered from poverty and lack of opportunity due to systemic racism and obstacles in the private sector and have traditionally found well-paid and stable employment through the post office

Episode 2020.04.01 & 02. (From the Vault) Davos and Impeachment

May 7, 2020, 8:35 a.m.
Two parts to an episode that were lost due to life's interruptions, here they are in their entirety. Episode 2020.04.01 Donald Trump, Impeachment and The (yawn) Pressures of His Office First things first, Impeachment is over – yes, but I recorded this during its waning days and thought it was too valuable to toss into the vault, so I am publishing it. I believe, progressives missed a prime opportunity to use impeachment to make a couple of different arguments, arguments that would have been beneficial in the future, alas they didn’t see those opportunities stirring them in the face. I spend much of the first half of the show talking about these arguments. Between the first and second segment (you may want to know, thanks to a last minute editing change, the second segment is not the segment mentioned at the first segments conclusion, you can find that segment in Ep 2020.04.02) – I play a very good song from Angels and Airwaves (BONUS for those who read this description as I don’t mention the song title or artist in the episode, the title is Secret Crowds). Then I dive into Socialism and what it demands from us as individuals in a society, which somehow has something to do with Donald Trump. Enjoy finding out how it does! Episode 2020.04.02 Davos, Donald and Fraternity While this is not an analysis of The Donald’s Davos speech, that may come at some point in the near future, as the speech is ripe with references to how Great America is under his leadership; this episode comments on what prompted it. He sounds different, he seems to act a bit differently also; this was not full of his past bombast; nope, he was reserved, on message and polished, could there be a reason why? I suggest there is, and not it’s not because “the American dream is back bigger, better and stronger than before”, all though that is a great line (. . .only tempered by the fact that dreams end and often cruelly so, especially when those dreams are escape mechanisms or imposed by psychologically destructive realities. . . .but I digress) it signals something frightening to the global elite and the huddled masses who may still believe in The Donald’s rhetoric. His speech says “austerity works” in a corporatist environment where the dignity of work is a euphemism for “obey”. Mr. Trump, in other words, has joined the global elite; he is their savior and is telling them that his ways work. Not a good sign for this country’s future. John Sutter/David Fenimore - A Visit With John Sutter

May 7, 2020, 7:37 a.m.
John Sutter was an émigré from Switzerland who came to California to establish his New Helvicia in the land of opportunity, located in what is now close to Sacramento, California. A man with vision and organization, and a liking to drink, Sutter built an economically thriving Anglo-American settlement outpost in what was then Mexican California. The economy was based on livestock and lumber and used forced Native American labor. The discovery of gold in 1849 at a mill owned by Sutter started the gold rush that ultimately led to his undoing, ruining him financially as the mass of humanity tramped through the lands he then claimed to own, on their rush to the gold fields. John Sutter was portrayed by historian David Fennimore and was part of “Rediscovering California at 150” the California sesquicentennial initiative produced by the California Council for the Humanities. John Sutter recommends “Ivanhoe,” by Sir Walter Scott and “Report Concerning North America,” by Godfried Duden. Originally Broadcast: February 20, 1998

The Dow of Deception: Mark Tulay

May 5, 2020, 4:04 p.m.
As the horrendous economic news continues to pile up, somehow stock prices keep bouncing back, leaving many of us scratching our heads. This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio tries to help us make sense of it all. Mark Tulay, a consultant and expert in the field of sustainable investing, breaks down how Wall St. can essentially ignore economic reality, and how the stock market paints a picture of economic health despite the tens of millions of Americans suddenly out of work. Will Wall St. be able to paper over the vast inequities in this country and propel the Sociopath-in-Chief to re-election in November? Or will this finally be the moment when we recognize that the stock market is a poor barometer for the country’s economic well-being? We also discuss the pandemic’s effect on sustainable investment, examine which companies are seriously committed to the green revolution, and try to predict what this upheaval will mean for Wall St. long term.

Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen: Into Eternity ONE of TWO

May 5, 2020, 3:26 p.m.
From the TUC Radio Archives: This is a conversation between Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen whose film, Into Eternity, premiered in the US in February 2011. Into Eternity is a documentary about the building of the world’s first permanent repository for nuclear waste in Finland. It shows not only the construction under way that will take 140 years, but introduces the people involved, the scientists, regulators and corporate executives who oversee this project. None of them will be alive when Onkalo, as the repository is called, will be finished in 2120; and they must expect this repository to remain intact and untouched by future humans for at least 100,000 years. Such is the danger and longevity of waste from nuclear power plants. Helen called Madsen “One of the more extraordinary people I’ve ever interviewed”. This is a thought provoking exchange between the veteran campaigner, Helen Caldicott, who dedicated her life to alerting us to the nuclear danger, and the young Danish artist. He introduces thoughts about civilization, language, danger and eternity. In their conversation they say they question how anybody can even contemplate a human made repository that will last 100,000 years and possibly continue without human maintenance. Does this means that the builders do not expect for civilization to last? Or do we have to create an archive of knowledge about the danger of radiation that needs to be maintained? And who maintains that archive? As mind-bending such a project as Onkalo is, we need several hundred more repositories like Onkalo since most of the waste of the world’s nuclear power plants is sitting next to these plants in the open. Is it fair to future generations to impose such a burden on them?

Canada is at a Fork-in-the-Road

May 5, 2020, 8:28 a.m.
The actual, living international community, consisting of rich, poor, and sanctioned countries alike, is co-operating to address the COVID-19 virus. Sanctioned and surrounded Cuba has extended its hand to every country willing to accept its help. Iran has done a better job in combating the virus than has the U.S/U.K. Venezuela has followed the guidelines on combating the Coronavirus, and has given aid to Antigua-Barbuda (after the U.S. confiscated its ventilators.) We have an international body called the World Health Organization. According to the Lancet's Dr. Richard Horton, the WHO is extremely important to all of humanity. Yet Mr. Big Spender Donald Trump wants to pull his money out, which Horton says is a 'crime against humanity.' And the major Canadian political parties want to follow the U.S. in deflecting blame, sanctioning countries, and creating a more difficult environment for everyone. Now, our Parliament wants to drag our WHO adviser, Dr. Alyward, in front of an inquisition to answer for his 'crime:' he said complementary words about China's response to COVID-19. He failed to "denounce" China's 'cover-up.' He's not a political hack like the members of the Parliamentary committee. This committee is an embarrassment. Five Eyes wants to create political and economic havoc at a time when the world is practicing international co-operation. The WHO has control over a narrative they wish to control. We have to stop carrying the ball for the U.S., and join the real world.
