On this weekâs Global Research News Hour, following two weeks of extensive violence orchestrated by Turkey on the region bordering it to the south, we turn our attention to Syria, and the ongoing campaign of regime change by Western nations, including Canada. In our first half hour, political commentator and Middle East expert Laith Marouf provides some historical context to the Turkish military campaign against the Kurds and the agreement brokered recently to resolve that situation.
We next hear from a member of the Syrian diaspora in Canada, Majd Zooda about the removal of Waseem Ramli from a high profile Syrian representative post and what it means for Syrian and non-Syrian Canadians.
Finally, we re-air part of an interview by Chris Cook of CFUVâs Gorilla-Radio with Journalist Vanessa Beeley about her August article on Canadian human rights lawyer Irwin Cotler and his championing of the White Helmets.

Abed Abusrour on "Beautiful Resistance"

We recorded the presentation of a dear friend from the Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem, Abdelfattah Abusrour, PhD, known usually as Abed. Abed directs a cultural center in the Aida Camp, which goes by the name of al-Rowwad. Learn more about al-Rowwad at alrowwadusa.org. Abed has been coming to the Boston area ever since 2009, when the Cambridge Bethlehem People to People Project and Friends of al-Rowwad sponsored their theater company on a tour of the northeast, including at the Central Square Theater in Cambridge. Here is Abed speaking recently at St. Paulâs Church, near Harvard Square, at a gathering sponsored by the Friends of al-Rowwad. He named this talk "Beautiful Resistance: a Creative Vision of Hope for the Future in Palestine."

The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 10 episodes, but there are threats of impending cancellation. Linda Kremer - The Legal Defense of Jailed Cambodians

Attorney Linda Kremer, a Public Defender in Marin County, California, worked for thirteen months in Phnom Phen, Cambodia, in 1996 and 1997 as Director of the Cambodian Defendersâ Project. The Cambodian Defendersâ Project recruits and trains Khmer men and women to serve as Public Defenders in the criminal courts of Cambodia. Cambodian law requires that no person be detained in excess of 48 hours without being charged with a crime or be held without trial from longer than six months. In practice, these rights are rarely honored. Without legal defense, those is prison are powerless to request compliance. Other programs you may enjoy are with Daniel Ellsberg discussing the Pentagon Papers and Vietman, and with Wayne Knight, a Mendocino County artist who was also associated with the Cambodian Defenders Project.
