Youth radio in Mendocino County California. Interviews about a class at Laytonville High where students are trained to fight fires and respond to emergencies. 56 minutes
For almost 20 years I produced a monthly YSO. Because of health considerations I have only gotten 4 or 5 shows done per year recently. One of the original YSO hosts from 2000 is Jayma Shields Spence who is now the Executive Director of Healthy Start Laytonville. For this month's YSO Jayma interviewed people involved in a wonderful community classroom program where Laytonville High School students get to participate in fire department training. Jayma interviewed Sue Carberry, recently retired chief of Laytonville Fire Dept, Wade Sizemore, community classroom teacher for Laytonville fire dept, and Sage Bickley a high school senior currently participating in the program.
I know that I was mightily impressed when I was teaching poetry at Laytonville High and pagers would go off and several students would bolt to the fire dept to assist with an emergency in the community. It always struck me as a brilliant idea for training the next generation of first responders. And a number of the trainees have found careers in fire departments and other emergency services fields. What a great community classroom program, hats off!
