Fury at cutting of ancient hedge near Yew Tree Farm as Wildlife Trust calls for dormice protection One planning chair described it as ‘outrageous wanton vindictive damage’ We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and improve our understanding of you. This may include adverts from us and third parties based on our knowledge of you. More infoWildlife experts have called for a stop to any more damage to the fields around Yew Tree Farm after a dramatic 24 hours in the fight to save Bristol’s last working farm. On Wednesday night, Avon Wildlife Trust issued a lengthy statement calling on Bristol City Council to pause its work to extend the South Bristol Crematorium and cemetery onto fields that have been part of Yew Tree Farm, because of the discovery of dormice living – a legally protected species – in the hedgerows and fields. But then on Thursday morning, contractors arrived to drastically trim back the ancient hedgerow bordering the large meadow where the dormice have been found, prompting fury from environmentalists and supporters of Catherine Withers, who farms the land at Yew Tree Farm. The scenes of contractors with hedge-trimmers, flails and cutters stripping back the ancient hedgerow was documented on social media by local campaigner Danica Priest, and described by one of the council’s planning committee chairs, Cllr Ani Stafford-Townsend as ‘outrageous wanton vindictive damage’.

Trees of Bristol website. Tree champions are active in a range of activities in support of our precious urban trees. Becoming and Being a Tree Champion Knowing our Trees. Knowing our local trees and knowing what they need to thrive, and helping others in our communities to know and appreciate their trees develops the sense of a ‘City of Trees’. The Trees of Bristol website was developed with the aim of providing a ‘virtual arboretum’ with which we can identify our local trees, find examples of a species of interest and visit our most important and iconic trees. Our Trees Of Bristol site provides a number of ways to find and identify trees: By selecting a specific park, greenspace or street and viewing the map of the trees there. By selecting the species of the tree and viewing the map of the trees there. By browsing the map of all our registered Bristol’s trees (not just BCC trees) . This site also provides: Locations, photos and data on trees in the public domain in Bristol. Information on the species of our trees. Boundaries and data on greenspaces, allotments and many other kinds of sites in Bristol. Our own planning portal which provides an enhanced view of selceted planning applications. Calculators to assess the value of mature trees and the age of a tree given its girth. Tree trails, animations of the change over toime of some sites, mapped data on wards and tree canopy.

Tree Forum website. Our terms of reference are: protect and enhance our urban trees in streets, parks, gardens and all open spaces. encourage Bristol City Council (BCC) to ensure the replacement of trees that have been (and continue to be) removed. identify and access funding to ensure the retention of mature trees in our city and slow the present rate of felling. identify and access funding for the planting of new and replacement urban trees. stabilise then increase the urban canopy cover in line with the One City Plan to double tree canopy cover by 2046. work with BCC to plan for “climate proofing” our city in accordance with predicted urban temperature increases in the 21st century. argue for a fact-based approach to ensure that Bristol achieves a sustainable balance between the built form / hard surface and tree canopy cover. provide a mechanism for open consultation on urban trees issues between local community groups, interested professional bodies and several BCC Departments. promote greater understanding of the amenity value of trees and stay up-to-date with current thinking, policy and research.

Vote in parliament on Gaza ceasefire stopped – GB News report with Kier Starmer. Starmer admits spoke to Israeli president before torpedoing SNP Gaza motion. Sky deletes confession vid Starmer’s admission too hot for Sky News to handle? Keir Starmer admitted today that he had spoken to Israeli president Isaac Herzog before embarking on the parliamentary manoeuvres – including alleged threats to Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, though Starmer has since denied it – that torpedoed the Scottish National Party’s motion calling for a full ceasefire in Gaza and condemning Israel’s war crimes. Starmer quickly attempted to row back on his comment to Sky’s interviewer and tried to replace it with ‘to the people who are actually involved’ – which means the same thing, since Starmer certainly didn’t get the Palestinians’ ok to his betrayal – but the words were captured loud and clear: The short clip was published by musician and pro-Palestinian campaigner Lowkey, but a fuller excerpt shows that it was not misleadingly edited: It seems the admission was too explosive for the ‘mainstream’ broadcaster, since the clip appears to have been deleted. Starmer may well deny ever saying this – after all, he denied saying Israel had the right to cut off food, water and fuel from the people of Gaza, even though he said that on camera too. He went on to say that Hoyle did the ‘right’ thing in caving to his bullying urging.

Bristol emergency medical doctor who has been in Gaza for MSF, on what it’s like there. Israel says bombing of Rafah to begin on Ramadan. Nasser hospital’s crisis: A life-threatening situation for doctors and patients WHO expresses concern for patients in Nasser hospital The Ministry of Health in Gaza issued a warning on Wednesday, stating that the Israeli control of the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Yunis city in the southern Gaza Strip is unbearable and constitutes a real threat to the lives of the medical staff and patients. The ministry spokesperson, Ashraf al-Qudra, stated that the medical teams are unable to provide medical care due to the lack of oxygen and necessary medical supplies. He pointed out that 45 patients have been transferred from Nasser Medical Complex to other hospitals, while the occupation continues to delay the evacuation of another 110 patients still in the hospital. The interruption of water and oxygen supply in all of Nasser’s facilities is due to the power generator being out of service, he elaborated. Al-Qudra also highlighted the accumulation of tons of medical and non-medical waste in the departments and yards of Nasser Medical Complex. He called on international institutions to exert more pressure on Israel to stop the militarization of the complex and provide medical and humanitarian needs for the patients and medical staff. He emphasized the necessity of releasing the detained medical staff and patients held by the Israeli occupation forces for the past four days without any justification….

Vanessa Beeley, daughter of a former UK Ambassador to Egypt, on who controls the Rafah border. Is Egypt building a new prison for Palestinians in Egyptian Rafah? by Vanessa Beeley Map from SINAI Foundation for Human Rights reportedly showing the work on an area to imprison Palestinians on the border with Gaza and the Occupied Territories – it is important to understand that under the Philadelphi Accords signed between Egypt and Israel in September 2005 – Egypt effectively handed over control of this territory to Israel which means potentially the prison would be under control of the Zionists. My report for UK Column News on Friday covers recent revelations that Egypt is preparing a “buffer zone” extension to imprison Palestinians fleeing the Zionist campaign in Rafah, southern Gaza – supposed to be a safe zone. Egypt has since denied any such reports but judge for yourself. In 2013 friends in Egyptian Rafah were reporting the bulldozing of Bedouin homes and land to start work on the buffer zone.

Zeb Jabotensky – a far right Zionist view. Vanessa on extremist Zionist movements with links to Ukraine. Lubovitsch and Kolomoysky. For the Israeli Right, the New Government Represents a Return to Its Fascist Roots With the inauguration of Israel’s new far-right government, Zionism has finally embraced the fascist ideology that inspired major sections of the movement during its formative years a century ago. Last month, Israel inaugurated what is, in effect, the first fascist government in its history. The State of Israel was the product of the Jewish nationalist movement that originated in the mass antisemitic violence of Tsarist Russia of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Much of the world, including European Jewish communities, stood by helplessly as organized Cossack militias and other pogromists rampaged through Ukrainian Jewish shtetls raping, pillaging, and murdering tens of thousands of helpless Jews. An idealistic Hungarian journalist developed a plan to save endangered Eastern European Jewry. Theodore Herzl envisioned the Jewish homeland would become a thriving nation for these millions, who were otherwise destined for penury, privation and death. Rather than wait for the tsar and his henchmen to seal these Jews’ fate, Herzl foresaw a mass Jewish exodus from these lands of affliction to a vibrant new state awaiting them. Initially, Herzl saw this state as a haven for Eastern European Jews facing the gravest threat. But later Zionist leaders developed a far more sweeping vision of the future, in which all Jews would either choose or be forced by systemic violence to seek refuge and build a state in Palestine. Zionism, in effect, negated the entire existence of a Jewish Diaspora by claiming Jews were doomed to destruction in the face of overwhelming hatred from “gentiles.” This principle came to be known in Zionist ideology as “negation of exile.” Its corollary was a “return to history,” meaning that Zionism represented a return of the Jewish people to their rightful physical and spiritual place in the biblical land of Israel. It also signified a normalization of Jews, so that instead of being weak, hopeless, and on the margins of diasporic societies, they could be at the center and in control of their fate. That project would soon become successful — so successful that, in many ways, it would come to resemble fascism. Zionism and Socialism Almost from its inception, the Jewish national movement offered a response to the question of governing the new Jewish polity. The approach that dominated the first eight decades of the movement reflected the socialist model, which had been prevalent in post-tsarist Russia and much of Eastern Europe. The revolutionary ferment that preceded the 1917 Bolshevik revolution had a profound impact on Jews who joined the Zionist movement. They embraced socialist values and sought to incorporate them into the new Hebrew colony: namely, the overarching value of work and the worker; or, in the terminology of the day, “Hebrew labor.” Perhaps the foremost example of this was the agricultural collectivist kibbutz movement. They also called for the formation of state enterprises and nationalization of the economy, including major industries. The opposite of socialist Zionism was Revisionism. Its founder, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, advocated a form of militant Jewish nationalism. Like the socialists, Jabotinsky was a child of Eastern European Jewry. But he rejected the tenets of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Instead, he took as his model the rising populist, fascist movements in Italy and Germany. Benito Mussolini was especially to his liking: he didn’t espouse explicitly antisemitic ideas, as Adolf Hitler clearly did. Like his Italian idol, Jabotinsky projected Jewish power and a united Jewish nation intent on achieving it.

Farooq Siddique, from Bristol Pakistani Society, on ethnic cleansing on an immense scale in Gaza, and Imran Khan election in Pakistan. Imran Khan wants to see a doctor. Why? “It’s been seven months since I had my medical check-up,” Imran Khan tells judge RAWALPINDI: Former prime minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, has sought permission to see a doctor. During a hearing of a corruption case today, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder requested Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the accountability court that he wanted his dental checkup done as he is 70 years old now. Khan has been facing a number of legal challenges since his ouster in April 2022 through a no-confidence motion. However, his party emerged as the largest group in the National Assembly in the February 8 polls and is in a comfortable position to form government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. When the court took up the £190m settlement case today, he walked to the rostrum and asked permission for a dental check-up. To this, the judge said, he can go to the jail doctor. At the judge’s response, the PTI founder said it’s been seven months since he went for a medical check-up. The judge then directed the former premier to file a petition in this regard and the court will give an appropriate order. After this, the PTI founder filed an application in this regard. During the proceedings, the court also allowed him to meet his wife Bushra Bibi. The court then adjourned the hearing till February 27.

Farmers in India protest over new regulations. Farmers in India plan to resume marching to New Delhi after one dies in clash with police – Indian farmers marching on New Delhi resumed protesting against the government after violent clashes with police left one 21-year-old farmer dead following several rounds of failed talks with officials over demands for guaranteed crop prices. Some burned effigies of India’s interior minister and Modi while chanting slogans. Tens of thousands of farmers hailing mostly from the northern states of Punjab and Haryana began their “Delhi Chalo” march towards the Indian capital last week, but were stopped 125 miles from New Delhi by police firing tear gas. The protests are a continuation of similar demonstrations that happened in 2021, which saw hundreds of thousands of farmers successfully force Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to backtrack on laws meant to overhaul India’s agricultural economy, saying it would hurt their incomes. Protest leaders said they would pause their march until Feb. 29, according to the Indian Express, and police in New Delhi remain on high alert, setting up barricades of cement, barbed wire, and shipping containers on key highways to block the entry of tractors. Internet service was also restored in some areas in India on Sunday after authorities blocked connection in response to the protests.

The Grayzone’s Max Blumenthal’s speech outside the Julian Assange trial. Andrew Feinsteins speech. Kit Klarenberg on UK stepping up war on whistleblower journalism. UK steps up war on whistleblower journalism with new National Security Act Under a repressive new act, British nationals could face prison for undermining London’s national security line. Intended to destroy WikiLeaks and others exposing war crimes, the law is a direct threat to critical national security journalism. Act specifically intended to criminalize WikiLeaks threatens whistleblowers During the 2022 House of Commons debate, knighted Conservative MP Sir Robert Buckland led the charge against WikiLeaks. Buckland, who was responsible in his former role as Secretary of State for Justice for “upholding the rule of law and protecting judicial independence,” argued that the National Security Act was a vital tool to prosecute “those such as Julian Assange who dump data in a way that has no regard for the safety of operatives and other affected people.” He later remarked, “none of us [in Parliament] wants to see Julian Assange and his type carry sway here.” The UK Supreme Court expressed a very different view when, in 2018, it held in a unanimous decision that cables published by WikiLeaks are admissible as evidence in court proceedings. Another knighted Conservative lawmaker, Sir John Hayes, dismissed suggestions the National Security Act could impact legitimate journalistic activities, arguing that it would only target “a WikiLeaks-type disclosure dressed up as being by a guardian of liberty or some such other nonsense.” Nonetheless, he conceded that while those primarily threatened by the legislation are those “working directly for a foreign power,” its targets could also include those not “ working directly for a foreign power, but…might [emphasis added] be aiding a foreign power or acting indirectly for such a foreign power.” Similarly speculative, vague language abounds throughout the Act, which criminalizes anyone who “copies,” “retains,” “discloses,” “distributes” or “provides access to” protected information, if the “foreign power condition” is satisfied. “Protected information” is defined as material which is “restricted in any way” or material which “it is reasonable to expect” would be restricted in any way. Those found guilty of sharing or publishing such information face penalties ranging from stiff fines to life imprisonment. Whether the protected information was leaked to them directly, or they simply came across it by accident, is irrelevant in the view of the British state.

Matthew Parris article on Ukraine – 26 year olds to fight. Matthew Parris spent a week in war-torn Ukraine talking to the nation’s under-25s. From Odesa to Kyiv, students to schoolchildren, he found fear about conscription, realism over future Dreams and darkness: how Ukraine’s young people really feel Dreams and darkness: how Ukraine’s young people really feel Matthew Parris spent a week in war-torn Ukraine talking to the nation’s under-25s. From Odesa to Kyiv, students to schoolchildren, he found fear about conscription, realism over future compromise and a persistent hatred of Russia ‘And Crimea? Must your country let go of Crimea?” His sigh said it all. It hung in the air, hovering above our conversation. He was a young Ukrainian trainee merchant seaman. I was a superannuated British columnist, neither war correspondent nor Ukraine policy-wonk, travelling the safer parts of the country in search of the opinions of youth. What do young Ukrainians expect? Not want — expect? “Of course,” he continued. “We want to keep Crimea. But in reality …” he trailed off. It was here, next, that I first heard what I was to hear often. “Crimea. Local population — ten years of Russian brainwashing, propaganda. Donbas too, ten years. We’d have to rebuild the infrastructure not just of buildings but of minds……

‘Russia and England: Loveless Deceit’ 2022 documentary, released this week in English by the Russian Embassy in London. A PURELY ENGLISH PROVOCATION Part 1 of a 10-episode documentary series ‘Russia – England. Loveless Deceit’ The “Loveless Deceit” investigative documentary series explores history and exposes the real incentives behind Britain’s approach towards relations with Russia. The centuries-long history of Russian-British relations is fraught with controversy. It has had its ups and downs: periods of consolidation in the face of a common threat and times of clandestine or open confrontation. Long story short – a rather complicated relationship. The British has continuously interfered in the internal affairs of our country, playing various political forces against others. The old Roman principle Divide et Impera has been embraced by the British Empire as the main policy of the colonial power and used by London ever since, peppered with endless hoaxes and provocations.

Alexei Navalny – video of him calling Caucuses immigrants cockroaches – and video of Nazi salutes in crowd of his followers at Moscow rally. Scott Ritter article on Navalny. Boris Nemtsov killed for revealing CIA/MI6 funding Russian opposition figures and parties. The Tragic Death of a Traitor by Scott Ritter Alexei Navalny, a Russian political opposition figure whose popularity in the West far exceeded his support in Russia, died while incarcerated in a Russian prison. He was serving a combined 30-and-a-half-year sentence for fraud and political extremism, charges that Navalny and his supporters claim were little more than trumped up accusations designed to silence a man who had emerged in recent years as the most vocal Russian critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to a statement released by the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service, “On February 16, 2024, in penal colony number 3, convict Alexei Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. The medical staff of the institution arrived immediately, and an ambulance team was called. All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, which did not yield positive results. Doctors of the ambulance stated the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established.

Hostile Non-State Intelligence Services gather in The Strand to Support Thought Criminal Julian Assange – presentation at The Frontline Club – : Kristinn Hrafnsson , who now runs Wikileaks, in the Frontline Club, on Pompeos’ views on Wikileaks. Chris Hedges interviewed Stella Assange, Jen Robinson and Kristinn Hrafnsson Monday about the hearing this week in Julian Assange’s extradition case. Presented by Vaughan Smith Ahead of and during his trial, Julian Assange was “held under special administrative measures, which is a euphemism for torture.” According to Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks itself would also be “hampered in actually operating in the United States. Lawyers have advised WikiLeaks staff not to travel to the United States.” The reason, he explained, was the declaration by former CIA Director Mike Pompeo that WikiLeaks is considered a “non-state hostile intelligence service.” This was a “highly thought out legal definition which we now know was defined to justify the plan to kidnap or assassinate Julian Assange.” In his concluding remarks, Hrafnsson stressed the fight to bring the case to an end “immediately”, pointing to the “punishment by process” Assange was being made to endure in “an obviously deliberate attempt to wear him down” through years of legal proceedings and abuse. “The original request for an appeal went in to the courts in September 2022. It took 10 months for the judge, Justice Swift is his name, to come up with two-and-a-half pages of no argument: simply, ‘I read all through this, I don’t see any grounds for appeal.’ And now we are here, eight months later… “This gives you a sense of the time frame. Five years. While he lingers and slowly dies in prison.”

The ‘father of Accelerationism’, more correctly known as Armageddonism, Nick Land who was ‘friends’ with Tony at school in the 1970s and also known as ‘Nazi Nick’. Accelerationism and entropy. Nick Land is an Nietzschean philosopher (Hitler’s favourite) and father of Acceleration. In the late 1990s he founded the radically experimental CCRU Cultural Cybernetics Research Unit while a professor at Warwick University, where he made discoveries and developed methods that would heavily influence Speculative Realism, Philosophy, and Cognitive Science, decades after the fact. His tech predictions made decades ago continue to come true. Land’s underground influence can’t be escaped, reverberating through many disciplines and in the arts. Also a father of NRx.

David Livingstone on the Muslim Brotherhood, MI6/CIA/Saudi Wahhabi origins of Hamas. Israel Created Hamas to Stall Peace By David Livingstone How Israel and the Americans foster Islamic fundamentalism to stall peace with the Palestinians and other imperialistic objectives The Israelis created Hamas. But before we explore that question, let’s start with a more important one. Let’s be honest with ourselves. If we can look at the situation from beyond the confines of current political discourse, and look at the emperor without his “new” clothes, we all know that Israel does not want peace. They want all of Palestine, and their belligerent settlement practices confirm that. But the Israelis are taking advantage of the world’s ignorance of the realities in Palestine, and posturing as being willing to talk “peace”, only to actually stall that very peace process, so as not to interrupt the further colonization of Palestine. So anything that can be offered as an excuse, will be. The most convenient ploy, presented with the sycophantic assistance of the media, is that of “terrorism”. But the masses are naive, and fail to suspect the Machiavellian extremes that certain leaders will resort to to aggrandize their power. This includes creating a false enemy, in this case, Hamas, whereby the right-wing leadership of the Israelis can point the finger to some “enemy” to blame otehr than themselves for supposedly stalling the process. The use of Islamic terrorism for the political ends of Western nations is nothing new. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1924, the British and Americans stepped in to fill the vacuum by providing their own versions of “Islamic” leaders. This started with the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was created through a grant from the British. Under British sponsorship, the Brotherhood flourished, and today represents a sizeable and powerful force in the Islamic world, but most worryingly, as the institution behind almost every act of terror in the name of Islam. More correctly, the Brotherhood has been a tool shared my numerous Western intelligence agencies, starting with the Nazis, followed by the CIA, but also the Russians, French, Germans and Israelis….
