Janet Mirobi was among the first female taxi drivers in Mombasa on the Kenyan Coast. Few years later she illegally boarded a ship that later changed her career and life. Now she owns a hotel.
Janet Mirobi tells how she and other women who entered the taxi business in Mombasa shrugged off male drivers' interference; how she used her contacts from ships in the port to learn multiple languages; how she was stowed away on a ship and learned to crew, while keeping her new occupation from her parents; and how she used her seafaring earnings to open first a pub in Mombasa and then the Jawambe Hotel. She gives her philosophy on how to interact appropriately with customers.
