In this program we examine the sincerity of the European Union's reaction to the inclusion of the Freedom Party in the new Austrian coalition government. The Freedom Party campaigned on the popularity of nationalist and anti-immigration sentiments, and the party's leader, Joerg Haider, has made comments praising Adolf Hitler's "sound employment policies," even going so far as to defend the efficiency of Nazi Storm Troopers in World War II. But quite apart from Haider's despicable rhetoric, for which he has since apologized, it is essential that European nations, which now take the moral high-ground, come to terms with their own racism and xenophobia. While Haider must be held accountable for his statements, the world press, in covering these events, has failed to examine general European and American xenophobia and anti-immigration policies with the same harsh light that Austria is now subjected to. Our guests are Hans Georg Betz, a Professor of European Studies at New York University; Dr. Harald Miltner, the Austrian Consul General in New York City; Yosef Livne, an Israeli diplomat and former ambassador; and Professor Karin Andriolo of the State University of New York.
