An interview with Norine Macdonald, President, Senlis Council
Produced by Stuart Neatby, Hillary Lindsay, and Pierre Loiselle.
Intro: Hillary Lindsay
Since NATO forces, including over 2000 Canadian Troops began their military offensive in Kandahar in March 2006, the UK-based Senlis Council has been one of the few independent voices reporting on the impact that this conflict is having on the people of this region.
The Senlis Council's December report, entittled "Hearts and Minds in Southern Afghanistan" estimated that, in 2006 alone, between 3000-5000 civilians were killed in Southern Afghanistan and 80,000 displaced due to NATO military operations. The report specifically criticizes Canada's involvement in NATO's operations and found that Canadian aid in areas secured by Canadian Forces was almost non-existent.
Norine Macdonald is the President and Southern Afghanistan Coordinator for the Senlis Council. She spoke from Kandahar Province.
