An Interview with Richard Vogel, a socialist writer and frequent contributor to Monthly Review Magazine. Vogel is also the author of a recent article in Canadian Dimension Magazine, "Sharing the Plunder of the South: The NAFTA Corridors and Canada.
Produced by Stuart Neatby for CKDU Radio
The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) is a secretive agreement between the governments of Canada, the US, and Mexico. Although the SPP's proponents argue that the initiative is simply a method of easing the friction of different trade regulations between the three NAFTA countries, the SPP's implications appear to indicate the harmonization of Canadian, US, and Mexican trade, security, energy, social, and environmental policies.
A key component of the SPP framework is the so-called "NAFTA Supercorridor" a system of highways, rail-lines, and oil and gas infrastructure running from Winnipeg to Mexico City. This corridor would in some places stretch to be as large as a twelve-lane highway, particularly in sections currently under construction in Texas.
Richard Vogel is a socialist writer based in Texas. He has written extensively on the SPP and its implications for Labour and Migration in all three NAFTA countries.
