Environmentalist Betty Krawczyk, who spent 7 months in jail in 2007, talks about what the food is like in jail. Alex Friedmann talks about the private players in prison food systems.

79-year-old Betty Krawczyk was released from jail in late September. She was held there for 7 months for her stand against Olympic development at Eagleridge Bluffs. Betty was jailed at the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women. ACCW is the provincial jail for women in Maple Ridge, BC. Betty shares her perspective on what the food is like behind bars.

PRIVATIZATION OF PRISON FOOD: Interview with Alex Friedmann.
Private companies have their tentacles deep into the prison system. They have come to control most of the food systems in prisons, jail and detentions centre across the US and Canada. In Canada the two main corporate players in the prison food services are Compass group and Aramark. Alex Friedman is the Associate Editor of Prison Legal News and VP with the Private Corrections Institute ( He has done extensive research on the private companies who run make and serve food behind bars.
