The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is pursuing legal action against the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and BP-Whiting. It is the position of NRDC that BP-Whiting "cooked the numbers" in its air pollution permit application. The refinery expansion project that has been permitted by IDEM is a massive construction project that will vastly increase the refining capacity of the facility. It is proposed that this giant refinery will utilize approximately 90 percent tar sands crude. Refining tar sands crude is a much dirtier process than refining petroleum crude. NRDC is determined to hold the IDEM and BP-Whiting to the requirements of the Clean Air Act when it comes to adding this tremendous quantity of air pollution to the Great Lakes region. Air toxics are too high for good human health in the Great Lakes already. What can you do to help stop this outrageous corporate behavior?
