PETE SEEGER, MUSICALLY REMEMBERED

An acoustic tribute to the late legend PETE SEEGER, who recently died of natural causes at the age of 94 – Including:

Pete’s song of international love, “Rainbow Race/One Blue Sky Above Us”;
His signature muse, “Turn, Turn, Turn,” rewritten from passages of Ecclesiastes;
Pete’s live ensemble performance of the song at New York’s historic Cooper Union, where your host shared the stage with Seeger as moderator of a 2013 NYC mayoral forum, with Pete’s touching story of how his late wife TOSHI SEEGER improved on the song with five new children’s verses; and
A live recording of Seeger’s “spiritual children,” THE RIVERTOWN KIDS, reprising
“Rainbow Race,” recorded in stereo by your host at a recent gathering of Volunteers for Peace where we delivered a keynote address on international understanding.

“COLOR” UPSTAGES “RACE” AT THEATRE FOR THE NEW CITY

An examination of the provocatively progressive play, “COLOR” (written by educator, actor and playwright GENE RUFFINI (whom one may have seen in such films as ‘Casino,’, ‘Meet The Parents,’ and ‘Ghost Dog’). ‘Color’ is an exuberant examination of race, politics, sex and media, in which an Presidential candidate -- who is black, like Barack Obama, but progressive, unlike Obama -- gets tangled up in conspiracies, accusations and a storm of internet, gossip and news challenges that threaten to eliminate the radical options he might bring to the White House.

The play is directed by noted performer ELIZABETH RUF MALDONADO, who joins us live on Earthwatch.

NSA SURVEILLANCE STATE EXPOSED BY ELLSBERG AND OTHERS, AS OBAMA DEFENDS IT, GOING: ‘DOOT DOOT DOOT, DOOT-DE-DA DOOT DOOT DOOT…’

Last week we presented a critical analysis of President BARACK OBAMA’s mediocre speech on NSA violations of the 4th amendment rights of American citizens, his defence of the NSA data vacuuming regime, and slanders of whistle-blower Edward Snowden. Obama’s procedurally insignificant, pro-surveillance speech -- and useless figleafs grudgingly mumbled for a so-called “advocate” in what remain as secret star-chamber proceedings, may have been timed to pre-empt the recommendations of Obama’s own blue ribbon privacy panel, which said of the warrantless collection of data on every U.S. phone call, email, tweet, letter and location: "We have not identified a single instance involving a threat to the United States in which the program made a concrete difference in the outcome of a counterterrorism investigation."

An excerpt from “OUR ‘ALMOST ORWELLIAN’ STATE, AND NSA SURVEILLANCE,” a surveillance forum recorded in Berkeley by KPFA, featuring:

Pentagon Papers leaker DANIEL ELLSBERG;
SHAHID BHUTTAR, of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee;
NORMAN SOLOMON of RootsAction.org; and
CINDY COHN of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

And finally, a Pete Seeger coda, fearuring “We Shall Overcome,” “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” and “Gimme That Ole Time Religion.”
