The Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) conducted a broad based systemic review in 2003. The review is looking into discrimination against women in prison based on sex, race and disability. They are issuing a special report regarding the treatment of women prisoners in canada. It is to be released in the fall of 2003. In May 2003, 11 organizations submitted briefs to the human rights commission in Ottawa, Canada. Filis Iverson, a prisoners' rights activist, was attending the hearings. She spoke with several of the women there about the conditions facing women in prison in canada and about the CHRC process.
