After the University of Idaho president resigned last year for misappropriating millions for an ill-advised building project in downtown Boise, the panhandle flagship of the Idaho higher education system was forced to make drastic budget cuts. The planned complete elimination of the UI Studio Arts program has enraged students, hundreds of whom demonstrated Thursday, March 25th. They followed up with a day-long art fair the next day, coinciding with Vandal Friday, the University-sponsored student recruitment day. More demonstrations are expected in the coming days.
The budget cuts are the handiwork of Interim UI President Gary Michael, a Simplot corporation millionaire, who is working free of charge. He has also angered students this spring by announcing the reorganization of the supposedly student-owned Student Recreation Center under the Athletic Department.
President-to-be Timothy White has vowed to stay out of the Studio Arts controversy.
